Emergency Dentistry

Dental emergencies can be scary and painful. The last thing you need is to be left scrambling to find a compassionate dentist who can help you with emergency dentistry in Sebastopol, CA. Whether it’s a sudden toothache, a broken tooth, or a lost filling, we’re here to help you get the care you need, fast.

Emergency Dentistry Doesn’t Have to Be Scary

Dental pain can disrupt your daily life, making it hard to eat, speak, or even sleep. It’s not just about the physical discomfort—dental emergencies can also bring a lot of anxiety and worry.

Trauma like slip-and-fall accidents, car wrecks, and sports injuries can leave you in shock, wondering what the future of your smile will bring. Timely treatment could make the difference in saving your teeth.

At Oak Tree Dental, our friendly and experienced team is ready to assist you with compassionate emergency dentistry in Sebastopol, CA, offering quick and effective solutions to get you out of pain and back to feeling like yourself again.

How Do You Know If You Need an Emergency Dentist in Sebastopol, CA?

It can be hard to tell if you have an urgent dental problem or a true dental emergency. Tooth pain of any kind is overwhelming, so don’t hesitate to call us if you’re unsure!

A dental emergency is any situation where you need immediate dental care to save a tooth, stop bleeding, or relieve severe pain. Here are some common dental emergencies we handle:

  • Severe Toothache: Not all toothaches are dental emergencies. If you have a bad toothache that won’t go away, don’t hesitate to call us. While many toothaches don’t take emergency dental care, pain can be a sign of an infection or other serious issue. So it’s worth getting checked out!
  • Badly Cracked or Broken Tooth: Badly broken teeth need immediate attention to stabilize them and hopefully save your tooth. Especially if there is heavy bleeding from the broken tooth, you should seek emergency dental care.
  • Knocked-Out Tooth: If a tooth gets knocked out, time is crucial. In many cases, we may be able to place the tooth back in the socket and save it.
  • Partially Dislodged Tooth: If a tooth is partially dislodged, pushed deeper into the socket, or pushed out of its normal position due to an injury, it’s critical to get immediate dental care.
  • Severe Injuries to Your Tongue, Cheeks, Gums or Lips: Severe injuries to the soft tissues of the mouth may need stitches to prevent worse problems.

What should you do if a crown falls out or you have broken dental work? While it’s incredibly distressing to lose a dental restoration, this often qualifies as an urgent dental problem and not a true emergency. If possible, try to save your restoration so we can take a look at it. But don’t use superglue or any other household adhesives to try and put it back in place.

Instead, keep the area clean, avoid using that tooth to chew hard foods, and call us to schedule an appointment as soon as possible!

Dental First Aid: What Should You Do in a Dental Emergency?

It’s hard not to panic when you’re dealing with a dental emergency. Bleeding from the lips, tongue, and gums tends to look worse than it is. Here’s what to do in a dental emergency.

  1. Stay Calm: Take a deep breath and stay as calm as possible.

  2. Call Us Immediately: Contact Oak Tree Dental right away at (707) 823-1029. We’ll give you instructions and schedule you to come in for emergency dentistry as soon as possible.

We’re always here to help you through urgent dental needs, even during nights and weekends. We’ll help you figure out next steps and ensure you get prompt attention when you need it.

  1. Perform Dental First Aid: Depending on your dental emergency, it’s important to know some basic dental first aid so you can avoid mistakes and ensure the best outcome.

In most cases, a cold compress gently applied to the face can help minimize pain.

If you have a tooth that’s been knocked out, pick it up by only touching the crown of the tooth and try to avoid touching the root. If there is dirt or debris on it, gently pour plain water over it, but don’t scrub or try to clean it!

If possible, gently place the tooth back in the socket, but make sure it’s facing the right way and never force it. If you’re unsure, or it’s not possible, try holding the tooth in the base of your cheek, or use a small container of milk or water with a pinch of table salt.

Similarly, if you have a badly broken tooth, try to save and rinse the broken pieces and bring them with you. This applies to broken and lost dental crowns and other restorations as well!

For soft tissue injuries or bleeding, gently rinse your mouth with a mild salt-water solution. You can place a moistened piece of gauze or caffeinated tea bag on the injury and apply gentle pressure.

No matter what type of dental emergency you’re facing, the most important thing is to remember that we’re here for you.

When Should You Go to the Hospital for a Dental Emergency?

While Oak Tree Dental is here to help with emergency dentistry for most urgent needs, there are times when you should go to the hospital instead. If you experience any of the following, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest emergency room:

  • Severe Bleeding: If you have uncontrollable bleeding that doesn’t stop or slow down after applying pressure for 10 minutes, go to the hospital.
  • Trauma to the Face or Jaw: Any major injury to your face or jaw, especially if it involves a broken bone, requires emergency medical care.
  • Difficulty Breathing or Swallowing: If swelling or an infection is making it hard to breathe or swallow, go to the emergency room right away.
  • Signs of Infection: If you have a fever, extreme facial swelling, or an abscess that’s spreading, you need immediate medical treatment.
  • Loss of Consciousness or Signs of Concussion: Signs of a concussion include nausea, vomiting, confusion, difficulty balancing, and falling unconscious. If you or someone you’re caring for has suffered a head injury, immediate medical care is vital.

Your health and safety are our top priorities. If you’re unsure whether your situation is a dental emergency or requires hospital care, please call us at Oak Tree Dental. We can help guide you on the best course of action.

I had my new patient exam with Dr. Navarrete and Andrea today, and they were a great team! Oak Tree Dental was referred to me by some friends of mine who go there. The Doctor answered all of my questions I had about my treatment; they were very clear about the timeline and what to expect, which made the whole process so much easier for me. Thank you to Dr. Navarrete and his team for being so friendly and knowledgeable. I appreciate the time they took to make my visit so comfortable. Highly recommend! :)

I'm a pretty tough mama EXCEPT when it comes to the dentist (ok and ticks too but who's not afraid of those!) I embarrassingly went wayyyyy too long without dental care out of fear. Rather getting cavities than go back.I was referred to Oaktree for that very reason and can not be more grateful. They are so, so kind. Never making me feel bad having gone so long and very attentive to my fear. Communicating everything they are doing before they do it, checking in constantly, and taking breaks for deep breaths when needed. Oaktree's helping get my dental needs back on track while making me feel comfortable and confident about going back. Big nonjudgmental, kind, nurturing sweethearts.

All-Around Excellent! I just started with Oak Tree Dental 6 months ago and I've already completed a daunting treatment plan including four replacement crowns and five fillings! The staff there is kind and responsive, and they seem dedicated to their work. Dr. Grados is a nice guy and a very experienced dentist. He does excellent work. OTD can get a lot of work done at each appointment, and they have always been ready to address concerns that come up. They are great if you don't have dental insurance because they have a plan just for that. I ended up paying less than I would have with my old dentist, with much better care in less time. Thank you Oak Tree Dental!
